Randy is survived by his beloved wife of just over 50-years, Bonnie three daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and Matt Johnson of Elgin, Illinois, Heidi and Jeff Bernhardt of Coal Valley, and Holly and Sergio Mercado of LaGrange, Illinois seven grandchildren, Aiden and Alexander Johnson, Cain and Vaughn Bernhardt, and Enrique, Estela, and Esteban Mercado three brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Sandy Engstrom, Stan and Julie Engstrom, and Dennis and Linda Engstrom, all of Coal Valley and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Above all else, family was the most important thing to Randy, especially his grandchildren. He coached his daughters’ softball teams, played slow-pitch baseball in as many as four leagues at a time until the age of 68, webbed baseball gloves for Temples Sporting Goods, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan who loved attending yearly games with his family and made it to a World Series game. Baseball and softball were a big part of Randy’s life. He volunteered at Hope Creek Care Center, the Coal Valley Food Pantry, and kept stats for the Orion girls’ basketball team. Randy was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He worked for John Deere for over 40 years as a computer analyst, officially retiring in 2006, but going back to work off and on until 2020.
